  1. P46 Holley Aubrey, Garcia, Main Idea

“The library door closing after I walked out was the exact kind of door Momma had told me about. I knew since it had closed the next one was about to open” (Curtis 59).
This is an example of a main idea. The main idea is that when a door closes another one opens up. This doesn't mean that when you walk out of a door another will open magically. This means that when one opportunity over another will come up when you don’t think so.
Has anybody had a parent tell yo what Bud's mom told him?

  3. P15 Holley Howard, Savannah extending the meaning

“...but when someone took them some food and blankets, the man said, ‘Thank you very much, but we’re white people. We ain’t in need of a handout.” (77)

Wow. Those people are too stubborn. I guess they think that all white people are able to take care of themselves and don't need help. I think they should be grateful for all the help they can get because obviously they don't have clothes or money and eat the same thing every day. I wonder if they come up later in the book at all?

If you were poor and needed help would you accept food and blankets?

    2. Yes, I would need the food, I wouldn't be like "I'd rather die than take something from someone of a different race."

  4. Nevaeh Floyd

Yes, I would. I mean if I were in a situation where no one could be in a higher position then I would have been grateful.

    “Bud don’t stop! Run” (84)

Why do you tell him to keep running? It’s pretty obvious that he is not going to catch the train. That’s like me telling my dog to climb the Eiffel tower. I like the motivation, though, I’ll give that to him.

What do think? would you do it, or not?

    1. Carson Hansen,

I would most likely run as fast as possible could, but if I was slowing I would most likely stop.

    2. I would try, but even if I failed, running is still fun.

  6. P27 Mrs.Holley Floyd, Nevaeh Theme/ Making a Connection

“I wanted to stay and look Deza and her mother but it was too hard to hear all the people crying and arguing .”(Curtis 87) -Theme

The theme of this quote is that some people are afraid of letting go of things they love and they might have to let them go to move on with their life. I remember this one time when I was leaving school and I wanted to say goodbye to someone. Fortunately, I remembered I had voice lessons. So, I just left because I decided I could see them anytime at school. I rushed out of the building and went to my voice lessons and had a good time. “Besides, I was still on the lam. I started walking. If I hurried I could get breakfast at the mission.”(Curtis 87)

-How would you react if you didn't get to say good bye to the person you loved the most for the last time?

  7. P15 Mrs. Holley Carson Hansen Prediction

“My momma says these poor kids on the road all alone are like dust in the wind” (Curtis 73).

I have a prediction to make at this point. I think that Bud is going to find his father at the camp. Soon they will be on the run together and will be running from the police or as the text calls it being on the lam. I think that this would be a great way to continue the story so I think that it is highly plausible. Prediction

Have you ever had to run from something dangerous?

    1. Not really, but I know ran from something I thought I was scared of like spiders, or running from a white van near my house because of "Stranger Danger"

“We slapped our hands together as hard as we could and got mixed up real good…”

That is disgusting! Why would you do that. You could get yourself very sick. The only reason you would do that so that you could actually be brothers.

Do you think this is gross or okay to do?

    1. They are such good friends, they act like brothers. Spitting on their hands is equal to probably touching the stair railing in public places.

  9. It is so not okay at all because it is utterly disgusting.

  10. P27 Holley April Danna (Making A Prediction)

“I started running again but it felt like my legs were gone. The car with Bugs in it was getting farther and farther away. Finally I stopped.”

He missed the train he was trying to catch. I think this is the falling action after he dropped his bags. The whole main Idea of chapter 8 was that he was going to get one the train. He didn’t though. So maybe he will have to wait to get the next train, which is in a month.

Has anyone missed a train ride and then had to wait for the next?
